Microsoft is considering whether it should port the Zune software and services to other platforms, including Apple's. There's no guarantee that the Redmondians will end up doing this -- or timetable as to when this could happen -- but it's one of many strategies under active consideration.

As I have mentioned in the past I have a rather small personal music collection so I enjoy streaming music and subscription services that let me listen to a ton of music from several genres. The Zune HD should be coming in a couple of months, rumored to be available 8 September, and as the launch gets closer more and more details start to leak out. The latest news has a Zune HD Marketplace image being passed around for people to consider. While it doesn't look like anything revolutionary, tough to tell from a single photo, it does look quite slick like most of the Zune interface.

The hit comic-book drama Heroes is taking on the charts by releasing its first original soundtrack next month via NBC Records . The soundtrack will feature exclusive new singles from Wilco , Jesus and Mary Chain (their first new studio recording in a decade), and Death Cab , in addition to classics from Bob Dylan and the eponymous track from Ziggy Stardust himself.The anticipated soundtrack will be available physically at Best Buy retailers and digitally through Zune and other digital service providers.

The NBC Universal Television, DVD, Music and Consumer Products Group has set a March 18 release for the album, which will feature exclusive new singles from artists including Wilco ("Glad It's Over"), Panic! at the Disco ("Nine in the Afternoon"), Imogen Heap ("Not Now But Soon") and Brighton Port Authority featuring Iggy Pop ("He's Frank"), as well as classic tracks from Bob Dylan and David Bowie.
The soundtrack, being released through NBC Records, will be available in CD format at Best Buy stores and digitally at Zune and other digital service providers.

With its new Web-based player and plenty of forward-thinking features, this music-subscription service hits all the right notes. ... As for Microsoft's Zune Pass, an overhaul rolls out next month, but for now it's a tepid, half-baked service only a Zune owner could love.
