Microsoft and its partners on Tuesday announced the first rush of phones with Windows Mobile 6.5, the long-awaited update to Microsoft's mobile operating system. The first update from Microsoft since March 2008, the new version adds a new app store and some usability improvements, but doesn't change the core underpinnings of Microsoft's aging OS.

The reviews of Microsoft's new mobile OS, Windows Mobile 6.5, are in -- and none of them are glowing. It seems that Windows Mobile 6.5 is more of a superficial cosmetic overhaul, not a bona fide upgrade capable of handling the mobile market's stiff competition.

AT&T's version of the HTC Touch Diamond2, the HTC Pure delivers Microsoft's Windows Mobile 6.5 in a slim, consumer-friendly form factor and at an affordable price. This $149 phone is as close as you're going to get to a Zune phone this month, at least.

Windows Mobile 6.5 is starting to hit the streets and AT&T announced that the HTC Pure, AT&T's rebranded version of the HTC Touch Diamond2, will be available soon. At $150 (after rebate, with a 2-year contract), the Pure is the most affordable Windows Mobile 6.5 device yet and it delivers some innovative capabilities.
