When Apple first introduced its iPod touch -- a media player that uses the same cool touch technology as the breakthrough iPhone -- I was both intrigued and disappointed. While I didn't care much for the iPhone itself the notion of a touch-based device that focuses just on movies, music and WiFi Web access called to me. What gave me pause, though, was its limited storage capacity and price.

Apple's silver 4GB iPod nano topped Amazon's best seller electronics list on Christmas Eve. iPods managed to land in five of the top ten slots on December 24 while Microsoft's Zune came in with a distant 17th place

The long-awaited Wi-Fi-enabled iPod is finally here, but it's taken a different form from what most of us would have guessed. The iPod Touch doesn't resemble a classic iPod at all, but is instead a stripped-down, slimmed-down iPhone.

When Microsoft announced the new Zune earlier this month, they also announced that the first-generation Zune could effectively get the new software free of charge. Apple hasn't been quite as nice with the iPod Classic, but the hackers, modders, and jailbreakers in the audience will not stand for it.
